Emergency Cardiac Care Courses

St. Francis Hospital, an American Heart Association Community Training Center, offers emergency care classes to all healthcare providers, para-professionals, and lay-persons. Classes are video-mediated. Bilingual instruction is available upon request. Students must dress comfortably and be able to do vigorous compressions. Provider books are required for all American Heart classes and can be purchased online or in our office. Please bring your own refreshments. Vending machines are also available.

Heartsaver AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) with Pediatrics

2.5 - 3 hours

With a cardiac arrest, minutes count for the heart and brain. Learn adult, child, and infant CPR, and use of AED for non-medical personnel. Chest pains and stroke emergencies also discussed. This class is for anyone who wants to help in an emergency. Recommended for coaches, teachers, and nurse assistants.

Heartsaver First Aid

6.5 hours

Recognized by New York State for camps; prepare your family, club, or group for emergencies! Learn the basics for responding to emergencies such as severe allergic reaction, bleeding, stroke, diabetic shock, and cardiac arrest. This class is now accepted by New York State Department of Health for camp certifications with written exam.

Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider

Original: 4.5 hours/ Renewal: 4 hours

Includes use of bag-valve mask, AED, and two-rescuer CPR. This course is recommended for lifeguards, nurses, doctors, physician assistants, and medical students.

ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Original: 13 hours/ Renewal: 8 hours

This course teaches advanced healthcare providers the current recommendations for advanced cardiac emergency care for adult patients. Includes use of the manual defibrillator for external pacing, cardioversion, and defibrillating. Practice the Team

Concept with case scenarios reviewing medication administration, EKG, and stroke guidelines. Must have current American Heart Association ACLS book, BLS course completion, and pretest certificate with a minimum grade of 80 prior to arrival. ACLS Renewal and ACLS for Experienced Providers. In addition to above requirements, must have current ACLS card. ACLS Renewal classes are 8 hours. For ACLS EP, two years Critical Care experience recommended for more challenging peri-arrest cases. EP classes will be held at our SIM LAB in Melville.

PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support

Original: 13 hours/ Renewal: 8 hours

This course is for advanced healthcare providers caring for pediatric patients. Students must have current American Heart PALS book BLS course completion, current PALS card, and pretest certificate with a minimum grade of 80 prior to arrival.
