St. Francis: First In Safety
Nationally recognized for the safest care on Long Island
The Leapfrog Group and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) agree that St. Francis Hospital offers the highest-quality and safest patient care on Long Island. Their recognitions are a reflection of the ongoing commitment that our hospital's doctors, nurses and entire medical staff place on patient safety and satisfaction.
Now, we have reinforced our rigorous and comprehensive safety measures so you can continue to access the care you trust and achieve the health you deserve.
Leapfrog Top Hospital Award
The Leapfrog Group has named St. Francis Hospital one of the Top General Hospitals in the nation for patient safety. We are one of just three hospitals on Long Island, and the only one in Nassau County and Queens, to get an ‘A.’ The hospital has earned an ‘A’ 15 out of 17 times since the safety score’s debut in 2012.
What is the Leapfrog Top Hospital Award?
The Leapfrog Group is a national watchdog focused on health care safety and quality. To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers in the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest known standards for quality and patient safety, and achieve top performance in categories, including:
- infection rates
- practices for safer surgery
- hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Ratings
St. Francis Hospital is the first and only hospital on Long Island, and one of only three hospitals in the New York City metro area, to receive a five-star rating from CMS for consistently high patient satisfaction scores.
What are CMS Star Ratings?
The quality rating system is designed to measure the experiences Medicare patients have during their hospitals stays. Consumers get a comprehensive look at hospitals so they can make more proactive choices about their care.
The rankings are based on qualitative measures, including:
- readmission rates for certain procedures
- emergency room wait times
- patient satisfaction scores
St. Francis Hospital has also been ranked one of the six best hospitals in the country for cardiology by Newsweek in its “The World’s Best Hospital 2020” list.
We are also the only hospital in Nassau County to achieve Magnet designation for excellence in nursing three consecutive times.
