The DeMatteis Center for Cardiac Research & Education is located on Northern Blvd., in Greenvale, NY, approximately four miles east of the main campus of St. Francis Hospital.
Beyond hosting the longest running cardiac rehab program on the east coast, the DeMatteis Center is also home to cutting edge technology for cardiac imaging. Under the leadership of Jie Jane Cao, M.D., nationally renowned for cardiac imaging and research, our team is making significant advancements in cardiac imaging, providing scientific knowledge that translates into improved care for patients with cardiac disease.
Novel imaging techniques have been developed in the last few years that have enabled cardiologists to better diagnose and treat cardiac disease.
An MRI of the heart, cardiovascular and vascular systems produces unique three-dimensional views via images produced by a large magnetic field. The measurements obtained during a procedure enable the physician to detect significant changes in a single patient or identify changes in a population during a research trial. The research physicians involved in MRI research at St. Francis Hospital are continually reviewing the images taken during the procedure and are working to establish and develop new imaging techniques.
An additional cardiac MRI on the main campus of St. Francis Hospital enables physicians to obtain MRI images of the heart on in-patients during their hospital stay.
Angiography and Calcium Score
Images are obtained via a 320-slice multi-detector CT scanner that allows physicians to analyze coronary artery lesions and blockages that were previously not visualized prior to the changes in the imaging technology.
CT Angiography is an application of CT that visualizes the coronary arteries non-invasively with unprecedented clarity and accuracy. CT continuously gathers multiple images via thin x-ray scans or slices from multiple directions and is combined to form an image set. Our 320-slice state-of-art scanner takes the 3-dimensional picture of the heart in less than a fraction of a second with low exposure of radiation.
Coronary calcium score is a screening test used to detect calcification in the coronary arteries and determine future risk of coronary artery disease before symptoms develop.
Inpatients and outpatients that have a CT scan for clinical or research purposes will have the advantage of the most cutting edge technology available at both sites.
By using three-dimensional echocardiography, images of the heart, obtained non-invasively with ultrasound, it is possible to evaluate the heart’s function more reliably than with a conventional ultrasound. It is especially useful in assessing patients with congestive heart failure. This technology creates a three-dimensional reconstruction of the heart, which provides detail on the extent of a patient’s heart disease and helps physicians recommend the most effective treatment option. St. Francis Hospital has active programs in the research and application of this technology.
Dr. Andrew Van Tosh, Director Nuclear Cardiology at St. Francis Hospital, focuses on research that includes the application of nuclear cardiologic techniques to the diagnosis and prognostic assessment of patients with coronary disease and other forms of cardiac illness. St. Francis Hospital has active programs in the research and application of this technology also.
