Neurosurgery at St. Francis Hospital encompasses the breadth of neurosurgery in the treatment of disorders of the brain and spine, well-supported by the fellowship-training and extensive experience in various neurosurgical subspecialties of its neurosurgeons. Our neurosurgical services provide operative and non-operative management in terms of diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of disorders across the nervous system including brain, spine, and peripheral nerves.
The Spine Program - Our spine surgeons work tirelessly to provide patients with the most advanced surgical treatments available. We offer various minimally-invasive options that can often be done on an outpatient basis. The Spine Program focuses on getting patients back to activity as soon as possible through focused and targeted treatments. We have extensive experience in the treatment of herniated discs and spinal stenosis in the cervical (neck), thoracic, and lumbar spine. New technology includes an intraoperative CT scan and minimally-invasive tubular retractors to allow for minimal muscle trauma and a faster recovery. Even patients who have had previous surgery and who experience new pain or symptoms can often benefit from one of our minimally-invasive techniques. Our neurosurgeons are also skilled in the treatment of scoliosis and spinal deformity as well as traumatic injury. St. Francis hosts a multidisciplinary Spine Conference geared to performance improvement. The Conference reviews all spine case with Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Neuroradiology and Pain Management. This unique quality assurance program reaches all aspects of spine care.
Herniated Disc - Our fellowship-trained spine surgeons can treat herniated discs in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine using the latest techniques geared to minimize hospital stay and reduce recovery time. Some minimally invasive procedures can even be done on an outpatient basis.
Lumbar Fusion - The Spine Program incorporates the latest approaches in the treatment of patients who require lumbar fusions. Many of our patients are treated through new techniques that minimize blood loss, surgical time, hospital stay, and pain.
Previous Lumbar Surgery - If you are still experiencing pain following a previous spine surgery, let one of our spine neurosurgeons evaluate you to see if one of our new treatments is an option for you. These can include techniques for indirect decompression or spinal cord stimulation.
Spine Fractures - Various treatments are available for treatments of patients with spine fractures. These can include immobilization with braces, kyphoplasty, minimally invasive stabilization, or in severe cases spinal decompression and stabilization. Cranial Neurosurgery - Our cranial team focuses on the treatment of various conditions in the brain. Primary Brain Tumors - Our cranial team uses advanced intraoperative navigation and microscopic techniques, and in conjunction with the Cancer Institute can tailor a treatment plan right for you.
Metastatic Brain Tumors - Treatment with either stereotactic radiosurgery, or open or minimally invasive surgery, are options that our cranial team provides at St. Francis Hospital. In conjunction with the Cancer Institute, we provide comprehensive care in the treatment of metastatic disease.
Pituitary Tumors/Skull-Base Tumors - Our fellowship-trained skull-base surgeons can employ modern endoscopic technique that allow us to treat patients surgically with few, and in some cases, no incisions.
Trigeminal Neuralgia - Facial pain can be an extremely debilitating condition. Various surgical treatment options exist when medical treatment is ineffective or the side effects become overwhelming. Our physicians perform radiofrequency ablation, radiosurgery, and microvascular decompression (MVD).
Subdural Hematoma/Head Trauma - St. Francis sees many patients who develop subdural hematomas from major to minor head injuries. Whether medical or surgical management is necessary, our team of physicians are skilled and highly-experienced in the management of patients with head trauma, having trained and worked in busy Level One trauma centers.
