St. Francis Hospital is a Stroke Designated Hospital
St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center® is a NYS joint commission certified Primary Stroke Center with the capability of performing mechanical thrombectomy. Our expert physicians, mid-level practitioners, nurses, and technicians make the critical difference in stroke response and treatment.
We adhere to Get with the Guidelines Quality Measures as put forth by the American Heart and American Stroke Associations. St. Francis has received the American Heart and American Stroke Associations’ Gold Plus Award as well as the Target Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus Award. We offer Reperfusion therapy, both tPA and Endovascular therapy.
In 2018, stroke doctors at St. Francis Hospital were able to restore blood flow to greater than 85% of our patients. We administered tPA, the clot busting drug, to 90% of stroke patients within 60 minutes. The death rate at St. Francis Hospital for stroke patients within 24 hours of diagnostic cerebral angiogram is zero.
Our neuro-interventional team utilizes state-of-the-art biplane fluoroscopy in our catheterization suite for the diagnosis and management of intracerebral aneurysms, vascular malformations as well as tumor embolization and diagnostic angiography. In conditions affecting the brain, neurointerventionalists insert a catheter into the groin and advance it through the vessels to the problematic cerebral artery. Depending on the condition, our physicians can deliver medications or utilize medical devices to treat the clot.
Our hospital includes designated stroke units with specially trained nurses, physicians, mid-level practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and swallow therapists, and imaging technicians. St. Francis Hospital’s nursing staff is continually recognized for its excellence, boasting several consecutive Magnet designations as well as several Beacon and PRISM awards.
In addition, St. Francis Hospital offers a Stroke Support Group. Participants meet monthly at the DeMatteis Center on Northern Blvd. in Greenvale, New York. For more information about St. Francis Hospital’s Stroke Support group please call (516) 629-2013.
