Gastroenterology - An Overview

Our division not only has the skill and expertise in diagnosing and treating all forms of gastrointestinal illnesses, but also the essential state of the art technologies that have made us confident in treating the most difficult of disorders.

In addition to consultative services, we provide all forms of endoscopic and non-endoscopic studies on an in-patient or out-patient basis. We have a modern endoscopy unit staffed with a team of professionals who provide our patients with warmth and comfort. Procedures offered include colonoscopy, not only for routine colon cancer screening, but also to help diagnose causes of bleeding, diarrhea or constipation. We also utilize upper endoscopy to evaluate causes of abdominal pain, bleeding, weight loss and difficulties swallowing. We perform endoscopic dilation, stent placement for obstructive lesions, and enteroscopy to help visualize and treat potential disorders of the small intestine.

One of the latest technologies, Capsule Endoscopy, can take images of the entire small bowel to find obscure causes of gastrointestinal bleeding, and help find evidence of undiagnosed disorders such as Crohn's disease. This device, which is a "vitamin- sized" capsule that contains a minute video camera, takes thousands of images as it migrates through the small intestine, after it is swallowed by the patient. This data is then interpreted by one of the experienced Gastroenterologists on staff.

We are also highly regarded in diagnosing and treating multiple disorders of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas. We are skilled in Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), which allows non-surgical treatments (including temporary or permanent stent placement) for many disorders of the pancreas of bile ducts. St Francis facilitates transfers from many area hospitals to help patients gain access to many of the gastroenterological procedures that we offer.

Many of our Gastroenterologists are also skilled in nutritional support, and can provide intravenous or enteral feedings, an important part of post-operative management for patients. Our team of Gastroenterologists are always accessible for patients who arrive at the Emergency Room with any serious gastrointestinal problem, and also available for follow-up appointments with patients at their offices, upon discharge.

Key Treatments

Colonoscopy - Colon cancer, the third most common cancer, is a preventable condition. By using colonoscopy we are able to remove polyps and prevent the disease from occurring.

Gastrointestinal Bleeding - This condition is diagnosed using gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and frequently can be treated without requiring surgery.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease - This disease is diagnosed based on history, physical examination, laboratory tests, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy. Patients are then treated with dietary measures and if necessary, medication.
