St. Francis Cath Lab Receives Prestigious National Nursing Award

25 October, 2019

ROSLYN, NY, October 25, 2019 - The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory/Ambulatory Cath Unit at St. Francis Hospital has received a Gold-Level Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). The St. Francis Cardiac Cath Lab/ACU is the only one in the country to have earned a gold-level award.

“We would like to congratulate our highly-skilled cath lab team for winning this prestigious national recognition for excellence in patient care,” said Charles L. Lucore, M.D., MBA, President of St. Francis Hospital. “It is yet another reason why St. Francis is continually ranked among the top ten hospitals in the New York Metro area and the best hospital on Long Island.”

“St. Francis prides itself on having one of the busiest cath labs in our region with excellent safety and success rates,” said Ann Cella, RN, Senior Vice President of Nursing Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer. “Receiving this top-level award is a reflection of the topnotch care our nurses provide to each and every patient, each and every day.”

The Beacon Award for Excellence marks a significant milestone on the path to providing exceptional patient care and healthy work environments. It recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with the AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards. Units that achieve this three-year, three-level award with gold, silver, or bronze designations meet national criteria consistent with Magnet Recognition, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and the National Quality Healthcare Award.

The gold-level Beacon Award signifies excellent and sustained unit performance and patient outcomes. Achieving a gold award is accomplished by meeting the following evidence-based criteria for excellence in critical care:

  • Leadership Structures and Systems
  • Appropriate Staffing and Staff Engagement
  • Effective Communication, Knowledge Management, Learning, and Development
  • Evidence-Based Practice and Processes
  • Outcome Measurement

In addition to the Cath Lab/ACU, five other critical care units at St. Francis currently hold Beacon Awards for nursing excellence.
