Cardiac Fitness Phases II, III, IV

Exercise is especially important for men and women who’ve had a heart attack, heart surgery, angina, atherosclerosis, or those with risk factors such as elevated cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure. This medically supervised fitness program allows you to exercise without worry.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

This program helps those with emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and complicated asthma or other chronic lung disease to live as fully and independently as possible. The program offers alternatives beyond medication, oxygen therapy, and breathing aids. Respiratory specialists will work with you and your doctor to develop an individualized plan to improve physical fitness and exercise tolerance, reduce hospitalization, and lessen the impact of lung disease. Includes education and medically supervised exercise sessions.

Physical Therapy/Orthopedic Rehab

Our experienced therapists treat a variety of conditions ranging from post-operative joint repairs to sports and orthopedic conditions, back pain, and balance problems. The Physical Therapy Center features individualized treatments, prompt appointments, convenient hours, and a variety of equipment.

Chair Yoga

Yoga can help heal and restore the body, mind, and spirit. This is a gentle workshop for seniors with exercises designed to assist with flexibility, range of motion, posture, balance, breathing, and relaxation.

Yoga for a Healthy Back

Yoga can help increase strength and flexibility, especially in the spine. Regular yoga practice can help to improve quality of life, symptoms of back discomfort, posture, balance, promote relaxation, and increase overall sense of well-being. Participants must be able to get up and down from a mat on the floor without assistance. Physician clearance prior to starting the workshop is required.

Restorative Yoga

Current research suggests that yoga may be a gentle physical activity option for patients with chronic conditions such as cancer, heart disease, lung disease and diabetes that can

produce benefits in:

Quality of life

Psycho-social adjustment

Symptom management

Ability to sleep

• Overall sense of well being

Restorative yoga is extremely gentle, meditative, and relaxing. All classes are offered at no charge to participants due to support generously provided by The Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer and The Junior Coalition of The Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer.

Tai Chi

This Chinese art focuses on slow, flowing movements, breathing, and meditation. A low-impact form of exercise, Tai Chi can improve physical condition, muscle strength, coordination, flexibility, balance – and decrease risk of falls. Emphasis is placed on breathing, posture, balance, “opening” of the joints, “softening” the body, as well as circulating the “chi” or “life force.” Each session runs 90 minutes, and the workshop spans seven weeks.

Beginner’s Schedule:

You must have gone through the St. Francis Hospital beginner Tai Chi workshop before you are eligible for the intermediate level.

Stepping On: Building Confidence, Reducing Falls

This program is proven to reduce falls in older people. The workshop meets for two hours a week for seven weeks. Workshops are led by health professionals and cover information on exercise, vision, safety and medications.

Hatha Yoga

Yoga has been used for thousands of years to improve the body, mind, and spirit. It increases flexibility and strength, while enhancing relaxation and concentration. This is accomplished through a series of gentle stretches, postures, breath work, and relaxation. Beginning and experienced students are welcome. Please bring your own mat or towel to class.
