Neurologic Rehabilitation Program at St. Charles Hospital

St. Charles Hospital's board-certified physiatrists and certified rehabilitation registered nurses (CRRNs) specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Together, our doctors and nurses provide 24-hour care to neurologically complex patients.

Our team of clinicians collaborate to support patients during their rehabilitation and to keep patients motivated as they work intensively to find new ways to think, move, walk, talk, eat and care for themselves.

Improving Brain Function

Occupational therapists use tools, like the Bioness Integrated Therapy System (BITS), to increase a patient’s thinking process. BITS measures a patient's cognition and assigns a customized set of challenges intended to retrain the brain.

Developing Speech and Swallowing Abilities

Speech therapists help patients develop their speech and throat control with advanced imaging techniques and advanced tools, such as VitalStim® for the treatment of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).

Additional Therapies

  • Neuropsychology
  • Recreational
  • Music

Our education program helps patients understand their unique diagnosis and the rehabilitation process.

  • Family and caregiver orientation and regular meetings help build a strong support system for patients during treatment and beyond.
  • Falls prevention and home education program empowers patients and prevent falls after discharge.

Downtown St. Charles helps patients practice real-world adaptive skills while still in the hospital. This immersive therapy simulates a typical home and downtown community setting.

Neurologic Rehabilitation Program at Mercy Hospital

Mercy Hospital’s (Rockville Centre, NY) acute inpatient rehabilitation unit offers comprehensive rehabilitation for patients who have suffered catastrophic neurological illnesses and injuries.

Our rehabilitation unit is staffed by board-certified physiatrists as well as rehabilitation nurses and aides, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists and social workers.

Mercy Hospital offers the latest and most advanced technologies to treat patients with neurologic conditions.

Bioness H 200 Wireless Hand Rehabilitation System and Bioness L300 Foot Drop System helps patients regain function if their condition is due to a stroke, traumatic brain injury, incomplete spinal cord injury or other neurological disorder.

Tyromotion Myro® technology assists, enhances and intensifies therapy in a motivational and creative way. It presents real objects, forces control and offers touch applications. Myro is beneficial for patients needing treatment in neurology, orthopedics and geriatrics. It is particularly helpful for patients with deficits in motor function, concentration, selective attention, visual-spatial perception and spatial-perceptive ability.

Speech therapy offers diagnostic testing for swallowing, including modified barium swallow studies, as well as flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. Speech therapy also offers VitalStim® therapy for the treatment of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).
